The National Railway Museum in York recently took centre stage in a special episode of BBC One's MasterChef, showcasing its stunning newly refurbished Station Hall. This spectacular venue hosted a lavish banquet as part of the semi-final episode aired on 27th May 2026, where eight talented chefs competed to impress the judges and a hundred guests.

MasterChef Banquet Challenge

Filmed in November 2025, the semi-final featured the contestants divided into three teams, each tasked with creating a three-course celebratory meal. The menu was designed by chef and judge Anna Haugh, who is known for her culinary expertise. The atmosphere at Station Hall was filled with excitement as the chefs prepared their dishes for the guests, who included railway staff, volunteers, and enthusiasts.

Station Hall’s Grand Transformation

Station Hall, which reopened in September 2025, is part of the National Railway Museum's 50th birthday celebrations. The hall underwent a remarkable £11 million refurbishment, enhancing both its architectural beauty and structural integrity. This revitalisation has made the venue even more appealing for events and gatherings.

Spanning an impressive 6,000 square metres, Station Hall is home to six Royal Train carriages, offering a glimpse into the luxurious travel of British royalty. Among the new exhibits is a historic WH Smith bookstall that was once located at London’s Waterloo Station and a wreath that was placed on the train carrying Queen Victoria’s funeral from Paddington to Windsor in 1901.

A Unique Experience

Craig Bentley, the Director of the National Railway Museum, described the event as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.” He expressed his delight in showcasing Station Hall shortly after its renovation:

“We were delighted to be given the opportunity to showcase Station Hall so soon after its renovation and bring its beauty and splendour to the MasterChef crew, presenters, chefs and of course audiences at home.”

This sentiment reflects the pride felt by the museum staff and the significance of the event in celebrating the hall's new look.
