The York hospitality community is gearing up for an exciting event this October as the annual Walk for Wellbeing returns, promising to be the biggest yet. Organised by the UK charity Hospitality Action, this fundraising initiative aims to support mental health and wellbeing in the hospitality sector while fostering a sense of community among professionals in the industry.

Event Details

Scheduled for Sunday, 11 October 2026, the York walk is part of a larger series of events taking place across the UK throughout October. Participants can choose between two walking distances: 10km and 20km. The event kicks off with a walk in Glasgow on Saturday, 10 October, coinciding with World Mental Health Day, followed by walks in Liverpool and York the next day. Other cities hosting walks include Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, and even locations in Cornwall and Edinburgh, culminating with a series of walks on Sunday, 25 October.

Community Support

As the hospitality industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, the Walk for Wellbeing aims to bring people together to raise funds and awareness for those in need. Kai Ikulayo, Chair of the Hospitality Association York, expressed the importance of this event, stating, “Taking part in Hospitality Action’s Walk for Wellbeing for a second year, some of our hoteliers have seen first-hand the invaluable support Hospitality Action provides to hospitality people during times of crisis.” This sentiment reflects the commitment within the community to support one another and promote a positive environment for all.

Growing Participation

Since its inception in 2020, the Walk for Wellbeing has grown significantly. What began as a small gathering of participants in London has transformed into a nationwide initiative, with over 1,400 participants raising £170,000 last year alone for Hospitality Action’s wellbeing and support services. Craig Prentice, the creator of Walk for Wellbeing, noted, “It’s incredibly inspiring to see the event continue to grow each year and unite people across the country.” This growth highlights the industry's resilience and the ongoing importance of community support.

Inclusive Participation

Everyone, not just those in the hospitality sector, is invited to join in and make a difference. The Walk for Wellbeing is designed to be inclusive, encouraging participants to lace up their walking shoes and engage with their community. For those who cannot attend the scheduled walks, there’s an option to ‘Walk It Your Way’ anytime between 10 and 25 October. This allows individuals to create their own walking routes and distances, whether on their own or with friends and family, promoting personal connection and community spirit.
